I got a new banner courtesy of Cello from japancinema.net! He is a fellow designer but a very talented illustrator. This is no joke. I was thinking I wanted a banner of an illustrated panda but did not have the talent to do so (sure, I have the technical skill, but I can't illustrate worth crap on a computer). Months later, here I am with an illustrated panda, and SO CUTE! This is pretty much what I had envisioned, with my favorite color red and all! Not bad for a guy who just met me. Thanks, Cello! And if you haven't checked out his site, you should. It is a movie review blog of different movies influenced or made in Japan. This means a whole lotta Anime and Kung Fu movies, both of which I am a big fan of!
#2 The lovely Insomniac Lolita tagged me to post one pic that represents my interior design style. If you've seen my Japanese influenced red lantern it should come as no surprise that I like Japanese influenced interior design! Black, white, and red are my favorite color combinations. My interior design style can be described as "Japanese Modern", meaning a mix between Modern interior design with Japanese flourishes. I like the simplicity. I like the squares. I like the contemporary. And yes, I like the Feng Shui.
It doesn't get anymore Asian than this! 1) I am Asian. 2) I love anything Asian, including (but not limited to):
- Eastern philosophy (Taoism, Buddhism)
- Yoga
- Mala prayer bead mantra meditation in traditional Sanskrit
- Singing bowls
- Harajuko street style
- Japanese book binding
- Wall scrolls
- Anime
- Karaoke
- Dragons
- Taking pictures
- Japanese schoolgirls
- Martial Arts
- Origami
- Bubble Tea
- Sushi
- Miso soup
- Ramen
- Chopsticks
- Tofu
- Rice
- Pandas
- Green tea
- The Asian giggle (I totally do this!)
- Haiku
- Obscenely cute smileys ~_^ >_<
- Peace signs
- Tila Tequila
- Geishas and
- Dragonflies
Symbolizing courage, strength, happiness and prosperity, the dragonfly was thought of as the harbinger for good harvest in rice plants, since it is their natural habitat. Akitsushima means "Dragonfly Island" and is an alternate name for Japan.
My love for dragonflies and dragonfly designs is synonymous with my love for the Japanese aesthetic, but independent of my Japanese tastes because I had no clue the two were connected until I was in college Art History class (well actually, the "History of Material Culture", but basically the same thing)! It was a happy coincidence that they happened to be one in the same. Isn't it funny how that works? My tastes often seem to converge in that way.
When I was around 12 years old and visiting the Philippines, I would see lots of dragonflies with amazing iridescent colors across the spectrum. Red, blue, green... I tried to catch some by grabbing their wings but I was too afraid. I would watch my titos [uncles] do it without a blink. One day, I was minding my own business when a dragonfly flew unto my shirt! I freaked out and started jumping up and down like a sissy. The dragonfly wouldn't move! Finally, I tried pulling the dragonfly off of me and was horrified to find that while I had pulled the body away, the head remained on my shirt! Without meaning to, I had decapitated a poor dragonfly! It is the one time I can say I caught a dragonfly. I just wish I could be more humane and let it go. Instead, I flicked the head off of my shirt.
P.S. I was joking about the Japanese school girls.
P.P.S. Well, who am I kidding? It's totally true.

20 wandering stars:
I love everything about Asia.. After all, my roots are from Asia. I love Asia's multi colored culture, history and above all the cuisine....
Congratulations with your new banner, it's really nice. I do like the Dragonflies too. They are mystic, big and beautiful.
I'm proud being an Asian too. :)
Cool banner indeed. I'm totally into Japanese schoolgirls too! :P
I actually like several of the same things on your list!! ^_^
Besides Anime, I also enjoy watching Super Sentai shows. GekiRanger is my alltime fav, and Shinkenger is quickly growing on me!
So, when you say "Japanese School Girls" do the "Three Little Maids" from Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Mikado" count? Even though they're just representations of English school girls?
(I decided to go with this type of comment instead of one relating to porn which was, unfortunately, my default.)
AK - mmm i love the cuisine!!
Elisabeth - thanks! it was a nice surprise.
Kikit - thanks for stopping by! i haven't always been "proud" but i am more so now.
OmegaRadium - aw, i haven't heard of any of those shows, but i'm glad you like a lot of the things on my list!
Mr. Apron - I LOVE PORN! I'm a female chauvinist pig!! porn rulez. kidding.. (about the chauvinist part. not about the porn.)
the banner is awesome.. such a cute panda :D
and now i know a lot of things which are considered asian :D
but were you joking about japanese school girls?
so cute! and you know i love that panda.
though not asian (though in asia) I, too, love so many Eastern things. Glad to see our list lines up.
(japanese school girls aren't on mine, though)
U c floreta I'm what u call a full-fledged Asian and I don't about half the things you mentioned.Ain't that weird? How do u come to know so much about Asia?Phillipines isn't in Asia I believe.N u actually trust feng-shui?We do have the wind-chimes in our house.I like the way u mix up cultures in your writings....I've thinking of giving u a blog award but honestly I will tell ya something.I don't know how to give blog awards.I'll still have 2 figure it out.
I have dragonflies on my socks today! I used to have a pair of socks with sparkly dragonflies but I wore them out, but these non-sparkly dragonfly socks are also cool. I didn't know they were a popular symbol in Japan.
I'm half-Asian on my mother's side. Her family has been in the U.S. for generations, so they're totally Americanized, but some things you never want to lose, like the cuisine! Yum.
You did quite the number on that dragonfly haha. Twelve year old girl running around with a dragonfly head hanging on her shirt and body pinched between fingers. That's actually kinda scary sounding.
Being Asian rocks. I trace my roots to that extra large continent as well. I do enjoy many of the things on your bulleted list. When taking photos of friends, I like to exaggerate the old school Asian picture-taking stance of a wide leg spread so that I can get good smiles from my subjects. Unfortunately it also gives good balance and a lower angle, so I'm tempted to use it more often.
Oh, your Asian Giggle link is borken. I totally wanted to click on it too..
lena - yay! glad you learned things.
Chase - only half joking ;) eh, probably good Japanese school girls isn't one of them.. it's a silly male fantasy :D but i do admit, schoolgirl outfits ARE hot (i want one). glad our lists line up also.
Deeptesh - i'm flattered that you want to give me an award! you actually have to be a recipient of an award before you can give it out.. but if i give you an award you can totally give it back to me too :P Philippines IS part of Asia.. south Asia.. Pacific islands. look it up :P
Eleni - aw, dragonfly socks sounds so cute!! i used to love buying funky socks. i stopped cos they always got holes :( and cool, i didn't know you were half-asian either.. you're Hapa!
Bryan - whoa you're asian?? i would not have guessed that! sorry about the broken link.. does this work: http://images.inmagine.com/img/uppercutrf/ucsi014/ucsi014007.jpg it's what i meant to link.. i'll have to fix it later though. and yes, i love going to cities and taking pictures.. i have a free pass as being an "asian tourist" so i don't feel so weird. it's actually a good cover! lol
mmm...sushi. lol! I've never tried bubble tea, is it worth trying?
I love the contemporary asian interior decorating! so clean and colorful. I tried feng shui once and I could never get it right. Does your place look that way or do you hope to decorate it someday?
Larissa - omg, bubble tea is soooo good! it's like smoothies with big tapioca chunks!! you should try the taro flavor (my favorite, and it's purple!).. or can't go wrong with mango.
lol, i don't have my place decorated like this at ALL. i don't think i could pull it off. :P i don't really like interior decorating. but if i could pick any thing from a magazine i would live with this style..
I like your design choice! Though I think I still prefer the big pillars and high ceilings thing -- something you would never find in Japan, I guess!
Even their temples look kinda... cosy.
You really do subscribe to all of the stereotypical, Asian popular-culture stuff...
Fix your 'Asian Giggle' link; you lost me with 'anime', but you fought your way back a little with the 'schoolgirls'. A cute Asian giggle might just win it for you.
the new banner is cute (: is the asian giggle supposed to link to something? this was a fun post to do and to read everyone else's.
Well, since I've been in the science stream for the last two years,I've forgotten my Geography! The banner is really awesome and somewhat rocking as well.Disappointed to hear that about the awards.....I don't think I can ever give u then because I'm not good enough to be receiving an award!Sigh!I suppose u can take it for granted that I'm awarding u for your performances ....I don't have the means to do so in reality as I'm a poor bloke.
I love japanese culture
Seb - high ceilings remind me of churches. but not a bad thing.. and that's my point. i'm as asian as you can get :P haha. i also was not aware i was supposed to win you over :P i'm too lazy to fix the asian giggle link. basically, it's a girl covering her mouth when she laughs..
Sarah - yea the link was broken. :( it's supposed to be a little girl covering her mouth to laugh
Deeptesh - aww, you make me laugh! you're not a poor bloke!
If - i do too!
You will love Japanese paintings, too, especially those by Hokusai and Hiroshige. Clean, simple yet elegant.
