If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead who would it be? I would talk to the Dalai Lama :)Being as that twitter seems to be the breeding ground and brainstorming tool for blog fodder, maybe I was meant to write about this.
So my first choice, already gathered, would be the Dalai Lama. This question, at least for me, has always been about trying to find famous people I most admire and respect, rather than my friends and family. It is a question that makes me think of which famous people I would most likely value time and conversation with. So, in all actuality, it becomes a simple list of people I'd most like to meet.

1. The Dalai Lama - I still regret not seeing him in high school when I had the chance. All my friends went, as an extra-curricular field trip, but for whatever reason, I was not invited! I think it had something to do with not being in that particular honors class at the time. But often, my friends remember this event as if I were there, having just assumed I would be due to similar interests and states of mind. I was offered a chance for a free ticket and spot if I turned in an essay on my thoughts for world peace and how I would achieve it. I never did write that essay because I'm 1) a lazyass 2) intimidated by such a big topic 3) definitely not a beauty queen. Ok, so the third one is a joke (albeit still true, I'm NOT), obviously, ba-da-CHING!
So where was I? The Dalai Lama. My interest in Buddhism started to surface right around highschool, at the time the Dalai Lama was visiting. It would have been perfect. Except that I didn't get to go and have yet to meet him. I will hopefully be traveling to northern India, in the Himalayas near Dharamsala where the Dalai Lama lives. Granted, I know I'm not important enough to request a private visit with him, but it would still be cool to visit his place of residency and maybe, just maybe, if he's in India, catch one of his talks. I have a lot of respect for him and the wisdom and compassion that he shows. So, going along those lines:

2. Gandhi - As a pacifist, I respect the non-violence that Gandhi emphasized in his message and movement. The concept of Civil Disobedience first came to my attention by Henry David Thoreau's essay. It states that people should not let the government overrule their moral consciences of what is right or wrong. In other words, if people think a law to be wrong or unjust, it is the person's duty to go against that law in non-violent protest so as not to perpetuate injustice. Civil Disobedience is courageous and Gandhi created a whole movement based upon it.

3. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Similarly, Martin Luther King, Jr. was also greatly influenced by Thoreau. In his famous Letter From a Birmingham Jail, King wrote about the injustices of racial segregation after being jailed for non-violent protest; an act of Civil Disobedience. With my belief that all beings should be treated equally, human rights and civil rights are among the topics of my greater concerns and passions. Feminism, as well as gay rights are also in that category for me. Although Martin Luther King, Jr.'s main focus was on civil rights, he gets it. I would be honored to meet such an incredible speaker and charismatic man.

4. John Lennon - Pulling out the World Peace big guns is John Lennon. Yes, I am a Beatles fan and my favorite Beatle was the one and only John Lennon. I even did an art project using his portrait above as inspiration in high school. He was a big voice for peace and love, and not just the hippy kind, but the timeless, everlasting love that we should all embrace.

5. Anais Nin - Anais Nin was a French erotic writer, and novelist most known for the publishing of her diaries. If Anais Nin lived today, she would most certainly be a blogger. She is the woman quoted to say "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. " Quite possibly my favorite quote that literally turned my life around. Through her writing, she explores the deep stages and emotions of love. I believe that love, like John Lennon's message, will help change the world.

6. Anne Frank - Anne Frank, also a diarist, wrote about what life was like during her time of hiding from Nazi German occupation. This girl seemed to have a lot of compassion and the biggest heart. She believed that at the heart of everyone's core being was good, even her enemies, and would regard people as equal to her, no matter how much they disagreed. Although she lead a life of isolation for a big chunk of her childhood and hardly saw the light of day, she found the simplistic beauty in all the little things; the simple and mundane. Each day was filled with hope and optimism.
When I first read her diary, I was instantly inspired. I felt I could look up to her and relate to her, as a girl close to her age when I first read it. I've since reread it many times because it is one of my favorite books. I guess I've always liked memoirs and maybe that's why I blog.

7. Miranda July - Miranda July is my (post)modern day art heroine. She is probably most famous for her film she both directed and starred in: Me and You and Everybody We Know, but she is also a writer, performance artist, and musician to top it off. Her project, Learning to Love You More, shows the power creativity can have with self-worth. And her book, No One Belongs Here More Than You, is a brilliant collection of short stories which all relate to the interconnectedness of human relationships in her quirky signature way. She is an indie cool girl that I have no doubt has many great ideas floating around in her head that I'd love to share with. A true creative genius, she has found a way to make a living out of doing what she loves, and successfully escapes the nine to five status quo while still being a major success.
* * *
All in all, with a bunch like this, I may just be able to achieve world peace, or at least make a dent! Now if I could have turned this in 10 years ago, do I get to see the Dalai Lama now? Good Karma, please?
If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would you invite?

36 wandering stars:
That indeed is a thoughtful and diverse list, Floreta. Really amazing!! :)
I live in North India, but have never had the chance to meet the Lama.
As for Mr. Gandhi, I don't really believe in his methods and some personality traits he had, so that's a no-no for me.
But, the rest of the folks on the list are pretty interesting, to say the least. I look forward to writing about my list of 7 in a day or two. :)
this is great. good topic too! hmm... i'll have to keep it in mind.
I actually thought of 5 of your seven instantly for my post then I decided that I would just talk about what I missed, my grand parents. I especially loved John Lennon and what he stood up for.
An amazing list of guests there. It would be one special dinner party.
I loooove Anais Nin. You got great list over there, all influential person.
To answer that question with"I wanna meet Pitbull" really makes me feel stupid.
Lol @andharis comment. But she's awesome.
You're awesome floreta, as are all your picks, I would go with aristotle, socrates, bohr, nikola tesla
Gandhi would probably want to sit next to Anais; you know how he liked to test himself. Maybe she could sneak her buddy Henry Miller in.
I think the Dalai Lama would brighten up any dinner party. Who couldn't love a man who admits to being, yes, the reincarnation of the living Buddha, and then adds, laughing, Just not a very good one!
Have a great time at your party. I assume y'all will be dancing the limbo after dinner.
we find today's post interesting,
as expected in a post by you.
however, Floreta, caveats:
>>>1) a lazyass
2) intimidated by such a big topic
3) definitely not a beauty queen.<<<
a lazyass does not post thoughtful,
timely, sexy and humorous pieces
(sometimes all four simultaneously)
on a daily basis.
your blog is one of our favorite daily reads
and this is largely due to your industriousness.
you often handle larger-than-life topics,
and you do so with an ease
and even-handedness that draws out envy
even in cynics like us.
not a beauty queen?
. . . baby, if only . . .
;-)
kid yourself not! you ARE hot! hot! hot!
you ARE gorgeous, sexy AND seductive.
- - - basically a wet dream.
all of this plus intelligent,
creative and sensitive, to boot.
sell yourself short some more
and you may convince us,
thereby losing an avid reader.
as for the rest of your post:
these are all great people and dinner with them
would be interesting indeed.
however we're reminded of
a favored quote from MOULIN ROUGE
where Ferrer playing Lautrec says
to his admiring love interest:
"One should NEVER meet a person whose work one admires;
What they DO is always so much better than what they ARE! "
even so,
YOU would be one
of our seven dinner guests.
{if we were a YOUNG man,
you'd be the ONLY guest}
as always, Floreta,
thank you for another
thought-provoking
post.
:-)
..
.ero
A woman of peace, you are! While I... I really want to meet Louis Vuitton.
He he...that's some list....I'd luv 2 meet U
If all of our dinners could be on different nights and I could choose to attend some of them, this would definitely make the list of best dinners.
b
I can see that you put a lot of thought into this! Great choices!
A wonderful guest list! Please, please can I come an pull up an extra chair?? I should very much like to include the Dali Lama at my first table too! Great post, and I think you've earned that free ticket now. :-)
Ten years change you from lazyass to hoping to see the Dalai Lama at his resident town on one of your off days from helping the locals. I think the correct term for you now is badass.
There is more to life than love and peace you know, Floreta :P
I think having dinner with Hitler or Caesar or some other conqueror would be a lot more interesting than a carebear hippy. What would they have to say anyway? 'Peace out, dude!'
This sounds like an inspiring dinner party, with lots of food for thought -- great company!
Thanks for introducing me to Miranda July
let me just say, Miranda July is my post-modern crush... Me You and Everyone We Know is one of my favorite movies ever. I have yet to read her books, but I guess that's next on the agenda now :-)
sumit - hmm what about gandhi do you not like? i know the practice of non-violence is not for everyone and i personally have friends who are pro-war! they definitely have some great points as well :) coming from the same country as gandhi, you might have more personal feelings or information about him that's maybe not necessarily taught here in the glorified version of history from U.S. perspective :P
chase - yeah, it would be interesting to see what you would come up with for your list :)
linda may - oooh who were the two that you didn't think of i wonder?
anthony - i know, right?? i'm not sure if i'm worthy! but, we are all human.
andhari - lol andhari. i have noooooo idea who pitbull is. and wow, i didn't know you love anais! <3
mr. c - oooo those are awesome picks as well! you can't have socrates without plato now though!! how about kant and nietzsche while we're at it. lol
murat - haha yes! the dalai lama has quite a sense of humor about him!
ero - i know i know, i need to work on not selling myself short! your wetdream comment made me laugh. haha! and maybe i was saying i WAS a lazyass back then.. maybe not so much now? you DO have a point. this blogging stuff isn't exactly lazy.. nor is my willingness to see the world and travel. (which WILL happen! i'm set on it) love your comments.
nashe - haha you sound like yoda! ;) ahhh but sometimes i feel i only 'brand' myself as a woman of peace and am i REALLY that way at the heart of my being? who knows, who knows..
deep - yes, quite the tall order!
b - ooo great idea! i'd like to attend some of the others as well!
linda - thanks! it was a lot of fun
sophie - ohh, i'd love a free ticket :) and, the more the merrier!
bryan - awww, that made me smile. thanks for the Perspective :)
sebastian - you've got a point though. i should have MORE variety eh?? spice things up? how about nietzsche and che guevera? fela kuti! ahhh, i'm attracted to the people who dissent/rebel :D
moise - it would be great company indeed
jennifer - you're welcome! i love it when other people hear about her and love it!
notsoliteral - postmodern crush!! that is cute. and so i suppose she's mine as well :) her book is great! i even have seen a short film called The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal that she narrated. annnd i've seen her erotica film she helped cowrite (The Center of the World)...safe to say i'm a big fan. :)
Hey Floreta,
This is a fabulous group of people to meet. Yes, we could be well on our way to achieving world peace. If only today's leaders looked towards these brilliant men and women and follow after them. Thanks for the insightful read. Very wise choices : )
Wow, I had never heard that quote or the lady in #5. Very cool choices and a quote that I won't soon forget.
6. Anne Frank.
Wonderful choice.
Actually anyone from WW2.
Your list is awesome, I would definitely love to meet some of the people on your list.
Going in a completely different route with this, I would invite some old Hollywood actors to dinner: Audrey Hepburn, Gene Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, James Stewart, Donald O'Connor... not sure they'd all get along, haha, but *sigh* I heart old movies...
That is always an interesting topic, and that's a wonderful list :)
Hmm - I think you've got such a great list here, I don't know how I would change it up. I know that had you submitted this as your essay - you totally would have gotten that extra seat.
If we changed the question to "Name seven people you would want to sit with in silence for an hour." Who would you pick? That's random, I know but I wonder if your list would change or if even in silence, the people you've named would give you the same type of learning experience.
write girl - thanks for reading! i feel like the guests i picked are too themed. maybe i should mix it up more. others i thought of were frida kahlo!
tammy - yes, i won't forget the quote either. glad to point you to her!
april - i loved anne frank and her spirit. so strong.
lovelila - that would be great times! i would also like to meet some 1920s actresses like.. louise brooks!
for the love of pictures - thank you!
rita - VERY good question! i think since silence is very spiritual.. a meditation, my list would be similar.
i m so comin to ur party for number 5 n 6 :D
do i need an invitation ;)
Pop Comes the Baby
You know, I'd really like to meet Rosa Parks. She's like a hero for me, an icon. A small thing can have a huge impact. I love your list.
You really chose great people. And ofcourse invite me along too!
feasting in that crescent-shaped cove
Great list! I think I'd be a bit intimidated to have them all in the same room at once. I think I'd have to break it up into at least two different evenings so I could enjoy it.
Would love to dine with any of your fabulous guests.
Mighty powerful list to host Floreta! I'd love to meet Dalai Lama for sure.
As always your thoughts ae well written. You have some very powerful people at your dinner, World peace, inch by inch is a great goal.
i saw the Dalai Lama once and I'd go hear him talk again.
You have such a diverse, yet noble list. Nice choices.
Personally, Judy Garland is at or at least near the top of my list. I love her. She was a beautiful woman, an amazing singer, a great actress, and it all ended sooner than it should have.
AD - you're most certainlky welcome!
MKL - oh, i love rosa parks too!
gautami - yes, i would invite you
amilliondifferentshadows - i know what you mean. i could easily be intimidated
gemma - would be a lot to handle all that once!
swapnap - yes, i would love that chance!
old grizz - inch by inch is the only way to go :)
