This week's Sunday Scribbling prompt is: Cheese. A couple weeks ago, Sunday Scribblings offered the prompt "tattoo". My entry can be found here, if you would like more context to this story, and a rough draft sketch of my overall vision for a much larger piece. I have been thinking a lot about getting my first tattoo and finally joined the club! Jeremy, a talented artist and designer, is helping me with sketches for the final piece. Check out his talented digital art and follow him!
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
~Anais Nin
Maybe this sounds cheesy, but that quote changed my life. No, really. It did. First, I love Anais Nin. She's my literary erotica novelist "hero", if I ever did have one. Frida Kahlo, among others. But, that's beside the point. What I love about Anais is that she digs deep into her heart to question, to ponder Love, and to believe in it. She peels the layers of her soul and displays Love in all it's wretched, glorious, and complex stages. She gets it. She gets the pain, the elation, the addiction; like a drug. She gets human suffering and imperfection and the basic human desire to be loved. The basic human desire for happiness, and Truth.
When I first stumbled upon this quote, the time and place was at just the right moment to cause an epiphany in me. And just like that, I awakened. I was ready. I snapped out of my self-made rut and decided to take the steps to change. First, I finally called it quits on my relationship after two months of what I like to call "relationship purgatory" hell. I experienced love, in all it's wretched, glorious forms. I felt painfully alive, awake, and breathing. And I learned, slowly but surely, how to let go.
This rose blossom tattoo represents the sentiments expressed in the quote. It represents my journey to emotional maturity and self-love, where I continue to slowly find my way. It embodies a bigger meaning as I continue to add-on to this tattoo in my travels. I'm not just stopping at the rose. One of my biggest worries is having a cheesy, generic tattoo that girls get. So many get roses. How is mine any different?
This rose will blossom into something more, something greater than itself. I have a rather complex tattoo idea with layers and layers of meaning all themed with journey/travel. It might be cheesy, but each section of the tattoo will have meaning, placement will have meaning, and even the order in which I get each additional installment will have meaning. Having them done in sections, in different destinations, further solidifies the meaning of journey/travel.
- The Rose - This is placed on the center of my body, on my hips/waist. The journey to "center" myself and find balance. The rose references the quote that started it all. My epiphany. The tattoo was done where I currently live, in Central Oregon (the "center"), and prior to taking my volunteer trip to India. The Rose represents "West". The western world, and the west coast region of the United States.
- The Compass - Imagine a compass wrapped around the rose, with the rose being "center". The leaves on the rose make up the "East" and "West" points of the compass while north and south will be added on. The style of the design will be flowy and open, with lots of spirals. This section will be completed in the "East", or the Eastern world of Asia when I move to the Philippines next year. Again, the compass symbolizes journey/travel and will solidify the entire piece.
- The Pheonix - In Greek mythology, the Pheonix myth symbolizes "rising up" from the ashes. A death and rebirth. Destruction and construction. Renewal. The first time I learned about this myth was during childhood, when I was watching one of those Big Bird movies. There's Big Bird In China, Big Bird In Japan, and some others. I've seen them all but I can't recall which movie had the pheonix. Either way, it had an impact on me. I thought it was the most beautiful concept. From struggle comes fiery strength! Resilience! (I hope that I have that.) This section will connect with the "North" end of the compass and wrap around the side of my back. It will be completed in 2011 when I move back to the U.S. The piece will be done in Portland, "North" of Central Oregon.
- "Courage", Smoke, and Fractals - Courage has become an important mantra for me. I try to live cognizant of my fears and challenge myself to confront them. Without courage, you would have no direction in life. You need courage to possess the inner intuition (an inner compass, if you will) and strength that it takes to "rise up" from tough situations. To realize you can always pick yourself up after a fall. The word "Courage" will blend in a nice script font with a flowy, smoke design (symbolizing the ashes of the pheonix, and the natural, organic flow of nature). It will connect with the "South" end of the compass and wrap around the front of my thigh. Eventually, the smoke will blend in with patterns of fractals; beautiful, natural mathematical forms that spiral out. This section will be completed last, and may be the most involved and complicated installment. For this, I will research and trust an amazingly talented tattoo artist somewhere in California, "South" of Oregon.

So basically you are becoming a piece of art now, Floreta? Wow, an artist and a piece of art. You're the whole package now.
I really like this post, I like your reasoning and you seem so happy.
Happy for ya! :)
Your rose would surely blossom.
I liked phoenix the best. The thought of rising back would always infuse new hope.
~Harsha
What a beautiful quote. I can see why it means so much to you.
The rose tattoo is looking very pretty too! :)
Congratulations on the first part of your embodied mural. I'm happy that Anais happened your way, and that you heard and took to heart her call into your heart.
Oh yes, I have that quote in my computer too. I didn't understand it the first time but gradually it started making sense.
Your tattoo will be badass.
Wow, love the quote! Now you've got me wanting to read Anais Nin.
liked the concluding lines :-) definitely true and applicable in its truest sense.
good luck on the tattoo :D
I love how each detail is vital to the completed piece.
I am not a tatoo person but I am very impressed with the thought process behind yours. So many seem to get random markings on their bodies and they look a bit strange. I particularly liked the part about courage being a compass - without courage there is no direction.
Another great difference between men and women. Men get drunk and just do it. Women think about and it and make it something powerful. I guess it's the way sex is approached.
Your tattoo sounds like a true work of art, both externally and internally.
One word: badass
MKL - yes, artists are likely to be attracted to tattoos, huh? i've always loved the artform, just didn't think i'd EVER get something on me..
maglomaniac - the pheonix would indeed be a cool piece!! i forgot to mention that i plan for the rest of the tattoo to be black ink only, EXCEPT for the pheonix which will burst with color!
lisa - thanks! i'm really happy with the first part :) can't wait to get the rest!
murat11 - yeah, i've always been fond of her writing :)
nashe - yes, i understand that quote deeply! haha. and yes, i'll have a badass tattoo!!
kristan - you definitely should!
totomai - thank you! :)
sunshine - i like that too.. and, that's not an accident. i've thought this out WELL! haha
cricket - that's ok that you're not a tattoo person. i wasn't sure if i was either-on myself! i knew if i ever got a tattoo it better have some meaning to me, so this will be perfect.
gs batty - you're so right.. i think this is what i do with all of life. breaking up, getting into relationships, finding the right tattoo.. :)
bryan - thanks. badass as in the concept. or the first tattoo piece or..?
you're sophisticated, lovely, lovable panda!
I love your tattoo! This is the first time I heard a special meaning for a tattoo - with objective and inspiration.
Normally people would say they love the tattoo so they get the tattoo. You're totally different, I love it!
I will give tattoo a respect :)
Cheers XOXO
I like that quote.
dad, will you walk one more time with me?
Love the tatoo..and the quote is really good
I was very taken by this post and the quote by Anais Nin. I had a person tell me once that they regretted marrying and then losing a husband. The pain was to great. It seems to me that a tattoo symbolizes the pain needed to enjoy the beauty. In the end your growing tattoo will symbolize all that makes you strong. Congratulations!
b
Great way to celebrate life! I have a Tat as well, for simple reasons that remind me of my father that passed away. It's such a difficult thing to do - choose. It's going to be there for the rest of your life. It's beautiful. good choice.
awww, thank you Netster, you're too kind :) you mean people don't normally think up meanings for their tattoos? :P i know it can be both ways, but maybe few go as far into is as i did/am. lol. i couldn't have it any other way, though.
gautami - it's my fav quote. thanks!
jeeves - thank you. the tattoo will only grow!
b - yes, that's exactly what tattoos symbolize, in general. and i think my tattoo concept also illustrates this as well. also, it's great to meditate on 'pain' while you're getting the tattoo done. at least, it worked for me. :P keep your mind away from the pain of the needle, BUT think about some other emotional pain that you may have had as some sort of catharsis or meaning behind the tattoo..
fantasia - thank you :) i instructed him to shade in black except for the red rose. i think it turned out well. i'm still kind of in shock about it though.. that this is Permanent and Forever! it's not just some sticker I can peel off. hehe.
Wow. Love the tattoo!! But even more important is the meaning behind it, seems like a lot of people just get a tattoo of someone's name and regret it later on in life, a tattoo like that is one I'd never regret.
wow!
ya did it!
er, uhm, congrats!
{maybe?}
your planned tatoo will prove to grow and be a beautiful thing, much as your blog has done. so far,
pretty good, huh?
also
we were so pleased to learn that we coincide in our admiration of Anais and Frida.
here's a fave:
"I drank to drown my pain,
but the damned pain
learned how to swim,
and now I am overwhelmed
by this decent and good behavior.
~~Frida Kahlo

If its the phoenix I'm thinking of (from a few posts ago), then I think its gonna look awesome. It's my favorite part of the tatoo!
I don't think it sounds at all cheesy to say that a quote changed your life. Sometimes people just have to come across something unexpected to give them the push to do what they needed to do at that time.
As to your tattoo, what you have already done is beautiful. What you plan on doing sounds like it will also be beautiful. It's good that you have really thought this through and given each piece meaning. I didn't do that when I got mine done. It was more of a "I want a tattoo NOW and I will just pick the first thing I think is cute" thing so that's what I did.
aw floreta you have super good taste in tattoos, I wouldn't have expected anything less.
tellie - definitely don't regret this yet! ;)
bare eyed sun - maybe?? and thanks a lot for the frida quote! good stuff.
canadiandoubles - thanks! i think the pheonix in general will definitely be my favorite.. even if it ends up looking completely different from my sketch (though i liked that pheonix too)
onemuse - it is pretty neat that i can trace back the shift for me down to a single quote, no? when i thought about the rose piece, originally, i wasn't thinking about the quote and didn't realize how it fit. while i do love typography, i'm not sure how i feel about worded tattoos (beyond just a single word).. think sometimes they're cheesy/tacky, so i started to realize that this image does a good job of embodying the quote.
mr. c - aww thanks! i remember you saying you thought i would in my doodle entry. the placement of the tattoo is actually an inch or two higher than i was originally thinking, and bigger than i envisioned it too. i think i was just afraid how it might feel against my hip bone, so i was conservative about placing it lower :P but.. no worries. i love how this turned out, placement and size and all!
Thats a fantastic tattoo reasoning!
mrs zeus - thanks hon :)
I love all the symbolism behind your tattoos. So I'm guessing this is all a work in progress? Can't wait to see the end result :)
That is a beautiful quote by Anais Nin. Do you recommend anything to read? One quote has changed my life as well. "Never apologize for showing feeling, when you do so you apologize for the truth," - Benjamin Disraeli
I used to always apologize for everything when there wasn't a reason too. When we ignore our feelings, we betray ourselves.
Like you, I've thought about getting a tattoo, but I could never find anything that I would want permanently on my body. If I do it, I want something with deep symbolic meaning to me. So when I read about your tattoo ideas and the symbolism behind them, I knew exactly where you were coming from. It looks great!
megan - yep, a work in progress.. kinda like me. :)
i really liked the "Spy in the House of Love" novel she wrote, and the first book that captivated me that I've read from her is "Incest: A Journal of Love"
love your quote too!
JJ - hopefully you can find something with lots of meaning for you! i just hope i don't get tooo addicted to tattoos now. hehe.
nice tattoo. I always wanted to have one but I don't think I'm brave enough to break the rules...
Last year I got my first and like you it had special meaning for my journey. I love that quote!
Lovely quote, tattoo, and plan. I look forward to hearing more about the process.
Beautiful quote, and I love the concept. The rose is pretty cool already; can't wait to see the whole thing!
nice tattoo and great thoughts associated with it....good luck to u in completing it!
It looks beautiful, and the meaning behind it, as well as the entire concept, is amazing. I'm glad you thought so deeply about it because so many people get a tattoo just to get a tattoo. It's great to know there's a real story, a real attachment behind it.
How did it feel? I know you were worried about the pain.
That's a pretty start to what sounds like an amazing work of art
latree - hehe, what are the rules exactly? :)
tammy - a tattoo that isn't part of my journey would feel to out of synch for me.
dee - thank you! i look forward to writing about it :)
retromus - that's what i thought. my goal was to have each section certainly stand on its own as one piece. so wherever i am in the process, it never looks "unfinished"
naarya - thank you :)
amindinmotown - wow, the pain was noooothing. it didn't even hurt. it was more uncomfortable than anything. some parts seemed to feel more pressure/intense.. but even still, didn't really hurt.
Amanda - thanks, i hope so :)
That's too Hot!!!
looking forward to seeing the total end product.. love the vibrant red! Ahh... I wish I was fairer to get some colours on mines.
How long did it take?
